This weekend at www.Bwin.com saw one of the biggest build ups in Premier League history to a final day in the season. The other English leagues had finished their seasons (apart from the play-off finals) but the Premiership teams still had one final game.

Ok, the title had been decided and we had a pretty good idea of had qualified for the European places but relegation was still an option for four different teams. The day had been labelled by Sky TV and the press as ‘Survival Sunday’, which is pretty self explanatory, all teams wanted to survive. Three teams lose their top flight status every year but only West Brom were certainly down at the start of the day, this leaving the final two places to be occupied by either Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Hull City and Sunderland.

I actually live in the Northeast of England and three of those teams play their football in the Northeast so you can imagine the atmosphere in my neck of the woods over the last week or so. Middlesbrough had to visit West Ham and had to win to stand any chance of surviving, they lost and subsequently went down, Sunderland and Hull could both afford to lose their games and hope other results went there way, this is actually what happened, Sunderland lost 3-2 at home to Chelsea and league champions Manchester United took a weakened side to Hull and battled out a 1-0 victory but none of this mattered as the biggest surprise of the season was unveiling at Villa Park where one of the so called ‘bigger’ teams in Newcastle were beaten 1-0 and relegated.
